April's Animal of the Month

April's Animal of the Month

In April, South Africa had an important moment for rhino conservation. For more than two decades, WWF’s Black Rhino Ex-Situ Conservation Project (BRREP) has been working closely with partners in South Africa. They are moving rhinos from their original population areas to new areas with more space to breed and grow in order to increase the number of critically endangered black rhinos. Initially 20 rhinos were transferred from a reserve managed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Department, and the total has now increased to 250. This marks an important development for the conservation program. Thanks to this program and other efforts, the black rhino population has more than doubled in the past two decades, from a low of less than 2,500 to the latest estimate of 6,200.
